Mandela Capture Site, Howick in KwaZulu-Natal

Visit the Capture Site between Nottingham Road and Howick in KwaZulu-Natal to see this sculpture of Nelson Mandela. In 2012, a sculpture was put up near Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, where Mandela was arrested in 1962. This was done to mark the 50th anniversary of his arrest. Now, this place is called the Capture Site. The sculpture is made up of 50 steel poles that are between 6 and 10 meters tall. It was made by the artist Marco Cianfanelli. At a certain point, the 50 straight, vertical steel columns line up, making Nelson Mandela's face appear as if by magic. As you get closer to the sculpture and walk through it, the image fades back into the forest of 50 poles and becomes a beautiful part of the landscape around it.

"The 50 columns represent the 50 years since Nelson Mandela was taken into custody," writes Cianfanelli. "They also represent the idea of solidarity, where the many make up the whole."

"Mandela's time in prison cemented his role as a symbol of the struggle, which in turn helped the resistance grow." Together with the KZN provincial government, the Apartheid Museum has made a museum at the Capture Site. Since 2016, people have been able to visit this museum.
