Hilton
General Information
Hilton is a small town, incorporated into the Howick municipality, which lies just above Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. Slightly cooler than Pietermaritzburg, Hilton is known for its spectacular flora and the first views of the Drakensberg.
Hilton was named by Joseph Henderson who was a merchant and politician in the area in the 19th Century, and is home to some of South Africa’s leading private schools including Hilton College. There is also Cowan House, a private mixed boarding school, as well as St. Anne's Diocesan College, Grace College and Laddsworth Primary School.
The town has a distinct English-country feel to it, which is mixed with an interesting sense of history and tradition. Lying at the start of the Midlands Meander, Hilton provides the perfect stop-over in which to enjoy the route. There are plenty of arts and craft stalls, restaurants serving first-class meals and great accommodation options.
In September every year, the Hilton Arts Festival is held, hosted by Hilton College and spreads out over nine venues – a delight for locals and visitors.
